Dow Splits Doubleheader with Heritage
The Dow High Varsity Baseball Team played two great games, but just fell short in game 2 for a split with Heritage. In game one, Trent Johnson threw a complete game to pick up the win for Dow in an 8-4 battle. Johnson would give up 4 runs with 3 being earned on 6 hits. He would strike out 5 Hawk batters along the way. Logan McCoy was the hot hitter in game one going 3 for 3 with an rbi and 2 runs scored. Billy VanSumeren was also 3 for 3 and knocked in 2 runs. Ryan Erdmann added 2 hits and drove in a run as well. Jack Bakus would blast a solo home run to break a 1-1 tie in the which then set off a 5 run inning.
Dow had their chances and threatened to win the game in the bottom of the 7th loading the bases in a 7-5 game. They were unable to push those runners home and fell to that score to Heritage. Nolan Sanders was the starting pitcher for Dow and picked up the loss although finding a rythm before reaching his pitch count. "Scuff (Nolan's nickname) really found his stuff at the end of his outing. He is coming off of a hip injury and we did not want to overuse him and I would like to have him available for Thursday's matchup with Lapeer. I was impressed with how he was pitching at the end tonight" commented Coach Juday. Sanders would go 4 innings giving up 5 runs, although only 3 of those were earned due to some poor defensive play by Dow. Sanders would show that he was gaining his stuff by striking out 5 batters. John Szajenko pitched the final 3 innings giving up 2 runs on 3 hits. Daniel Kowalczyk went 3 for 3 driving in 2 runs and scoring 1 himself. Caleb Brenske was 2 for 3 and scored 2 runs.
The Chargers are now 11-9 on the season and will travel to Lapeer on Thursday May 13th for a SVL doubleheader.
